Much to Laike in Otago championship results
Katri Laike was determined to retain her keirin title and sneaked in behind the motorbike that paced the cyclists around the track for five laps.
She was competing in the elite women's event on the final night of the Lion Foundation-sponsored national championships at the Seddon Park Velodrome on Saturday.
Laike won the gold medal when she sped around the final lap in 12.85sec. Auckland's Alice King and Bridgette Broad filled the minor places.
Laike spearheaded a brilliant Otago medal-winning performance at the championships when the cyclists won 25 medals - 11 gold, seven silver and seven bronze. It was Otago's best performance at a national championships.
Auckland won the teams competition with 134 points Canterbury was second on 106, with Otago third on 95.
