A Victory in the highly contested Driedaagse van West-Vlaanderen in Belgium has put the name Jessie Sergent on the lips of many of those who follow cycling closely. Sergent a product of the world leading BikeNZ high performance track program turned professional this year for the Radioshack team after spending two seasons at the fledgling outfit Trek - Livestrong.
Sergent took the opening days prologue time trial after destroying the top class field by a winning margin of ten seconds. Day three saw the Radioshack team step up and defend the Kiwi leaders margin and ride on the fron with him in the breakaway for 175km keeping him safe and protected in the fierce crosswinds.
“The people who only follow road cycling will know me soon enough now,” said Sergent. “I will still do the track and will enjoy it and will work toward the next Olympic Games, but you will see me more and more on the road. After London 2012 I will probably be a fulltime road cyclist.”
