Professional Cyclists Vs UCI - Round One
17 Feb, 2011
“The Union Cycliste Internationale will be held civil and criminal liable if any damage or injury would result from not using the earphones in races.” This said Gianni Bugno, President of the ‘Cyclistes Professionnels Associés’ (CPA) at a meeting of 21 professional road race teams held in Mallorca last week. Here many professional racers and teams of different nationalities have signed a document on the matter.

At this meeting of the, in the CPA united, professional road racers, more demands were made at the UCI. A CPA press release states that: “The competitors ask that the UCI considers the CPA and its president Gianni Bugno as the primary interlocutor for the racer category relatively to the issues about road racing.

“The recently constituted athletic commission by the UCI can´t substitute the CPA. The CPA should be entitled to take part and vote in the Professional Cycling Council, the UCI Road Commission and in the Anti-Doping Commission through its representatives.”

Further the CPA: “ask that the UCI keeps more attention to their needs and rights. The competitors should be considered the primary and essential element of the whole movement.”

On the earphone issue the CPA press release says: “The competitors ask that the UCI starts an open discussion regarding the earphones in order to find the correct solution between media, race teams and the competitors. The use of the earphones are fundamental for the safety during the competitions.

“It is not admissible that the UCI has decided about the earphone ban without the opinion of the racing teams, the race directors and the CPA that represents the competitors. Lastly, the competitors would like to inform that if the UCI won´t accommodate the above instances they will consider (also in agreement with the teams and team managers) the most incisive protest actions in order to protect their rights.”

“Before moving to such strong protests the CPA hopes that the UCI will accept the proposal to open a real dialogue on the topic earphones in record time with all the international associations of the category.
