Shem Rodger Takes First Tour Win for Pure Black
16 Jan, 2011

Going into the final stage of the Hub Tour Shem Rodger held a 7 second lead over PureBlack Racing Junior and local boy Fraser Gough. It was shaping up as an intriguing last day with a hill finish and Jeremy Vennell (Bissell) trying to reclaim the Yellow jersey he lost in yesterday’s morning stage.

The race itself got really interesting when about 20km from the finish a cross wind split the peloton allowing 6 riders to get away including Shem, Tim Gudsell from our Pro team, Dion Smith from the Junior team, Jeremy Vennell and Paddy Bevin(both from Bissell) and Hayden McCormack. Unfortunately for Fraser Gough a puncture meant he didn’t make the split after some strong riding on Friday and Saturday.

The group of six had managed to build a lead of 20seconds over the peloton as they hit the bottom of the climb and as Jeremy Vennell piled on the pressure on the climb to the finish Shem held his wheel all the way to the top to secure the GC win and Yellow jersey.

Unofficially Dion Smith was the top finisher in the King of the Mountain points competition, Tim Gudsell finished 5th and Fraser Gough 6th overall.
