Jack Bauer Interview - 2009 Season Revelation
17 Dec, 2009 - Karl Murray

Cyclingnz columnist Karl Murray hits the interview trail with one of his team mates from the recent Powernet Tour of Southland, Jack Bauer.  Bauer has been a revelation in cycling this season and looks to next season as he embarks on his first year with his new team.

Karl: How did you get into cycling?

Jack: I began racing mountainbikes as a kid growing up in Golden Bay near Nelson

Karl: What races will you be doing in 2010?

Jack: early Jan I will ride the NZ elite national road champs, Tour of Wellington and also NZ track Nationals individual pursuit. Then off to Nice in France for Haut Var, Varcluse and Murcia

Karl: What is your new team and how did that come about?

Jack: Endura Racing, they are an English team. I got headhunted through the results of a lab test I did with Columbia over in Belgium this year. An agent setting up the team got my details and approached me with some ideas and a proposal for 2010.

Karl: You recently beat Heath Blacgrove on his birthday at the Long bay classic which must have felt good after finishing 2nd to him at this years Tour Of Southland (TOS)

Jack: Yeah I was stoked to get the win, it was a tough race and way harder than expected but I definitely went there to win it.

Karl: Will you try and win the TOS in 2010?

Jack: Of course, I'll give it a stab!

Karl: After TOS this year you did some track riding, is this something you will pursue to the highest level?

Jack: Definitely. The support is there for promising riders in NZ to make something of themselves on the track, and this is something I will pursue 100%

Karl: How many km’s did you do this year?

Jack: No idea. Quite a few!

Karl: When are you heading back to race for your new team?

Jack: 14th of Feb I am heading over to Nice to start the season

Favorite training ride: Golden Bay, Parapara to top of Takaka hill return. 100k round trip with a good climb in the middle
