Armstrong and RadioShack To Open Season in Australia
3 Dec, 2009

Lance Armstrong’s Team RadioShack will make its worldwide debut with a competitive team at the 2010 Santos Tour Down Under in Adelaide.

Santos Tour Down Under Race Director, Mike Turtur, today confirmed the full rider roster that Team RadioShack will bring to the first UCI ProTour race of the season.

"There’s no doubt that it’s great for the race and for South Australia that Lance is returning to the Santos Tour Down Under in January," says Mike Turtur.

"He is real legend of the sport and it’s been massive for our race that he made his cycling comeback here in 2009 and will debut Team RadioShack here in 2010.

"While much of the media focus will be on Armstrong, he will be joined by a very strong RadioShack team who are all great riders in their own right."

"Tour de France stage winners Yaroslav Popovych and Gert Steegmans will be key figures in RadioShack’s

team in Adelaide.

"Popovych has been a loyal servant of Armstrong’s at Discovery Channel and Astana, and is a very capable rider himself. Our race gives him an opportunity to do well, and will also suit Steegman’s sprinting skills."

Yaroslav Popovych won the young rider classification of the 2005 Tour de France and a stage of the 2006 event. Belgian Gert Steegmans is a two-time stage winner of the Tour de France, winning a stage in 2007 and the prestigious final stage at the Champs-Élysées in 2008.

Further fuel to the Team RadioShack fire will be provided next year from South Africa’s Daryl Impey, USA’s Jason McCartney, Belgium’s Sebastien Rosseler and Tomas Vaitkus from Lithuania.

"Jason McCartney has shown that he’s a good climber, winning the mountain classification at this year’s Tour of California. I’d expect him to be a contender for Škoda King of the Mountain points here in Adelaide," says Mike Turtur.

Johan Bruyneel will be attending the 2010 Santos Tour Down Under in Adelaide to oversee Team RadioShack in the capacity of Team Director.

"RadioShack will be very competitive from the word go. Johan Bruyneel plays to win and the team racing in Adelaide next year is strong, tough and experienced, and will want to make their presence felt as the cycling world watches," says Mike Turtur.

Team RadioShack will be led by Team Manager Alain Gallopin (FRA) at the 2010 Santos Tour Down Under and include riders:

Lance Armstrong (USA) Daryl Impey (RSA) Jason McCartney (USA)

Yaroslav Popovych (UKR) Sebastien Rosseler (BEL) Gert Steegmans (BEL)

Tomas Vaitkus (LTU)

More rider and team announcements will be issued over the coming weeks.
