Wippert Closes Out Incredible Tour of California for Drapac
18 May, 2015
Drapac Cycling closed out a successful first run in the Amgen Tour of California with another podium today in the iconic finish at the Rose Bowl. With a near perfect lead out by the team, Wouter Wippert sprinted to second, with Mark Cavendish taking the win and Peter Sagan third.

"We came to California to race the best riders and we showed we can ride with them. I, of course, wanted the win today but have to settle for second to Cav. It is good motivation for me and for the team. We can see improvement and that is a positive for us," Wippert said. "Graeme delivered me exactly where I needed to be today and you can see we are really coming together as a group, both on the sprint stages and the hilly stages as well."

The 105km stage started with four laps around L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles where the first break went, initiated by Etixx-Quickstep rider Yves Lampaert. At 10km into the stage the gap went to 15 seconds and he was joined by four chasers. However they were caught just before the intermediate sprint.

On the final circuit, a break of four went off the front and rolled it out to 35 seconds. Drapac then sent Darren Lapthorne to the front to control the field and chip away at the time gap. The field came together with two laps to go on the final circuit and the mad dash for control of the field began. With fans ten deep around the course, the roaring crowd witnessed a sensational closing sprint.

"The team as a whole can be proud of our efforts for the week, up against some of the best riders in the world. The results were fantastic and above expectations. Being so close there is that 'what if' of course. We had a hiccup or two but we held it together and came away with good results," Travis Meyer said.

"We came to be race aggressive and make a name for ourselves. Confidence is huge in bike racing when you are on the world stage. It sounds like a small thing, its not just in the place in the bunch but also for their belief in themselves. This week we started off strong with Will setting the tone at the start with the breakaway and earning two jerseys. That was huge for us and very significant for us," Tom Southam, Sports Director said. "I am satisfied with it and so should the guys."
The team actively participated in a variety of community events, including a morning at Sutter Children's Hospital in Sacramento, as well as engagements with our partners.
