Tony Martin Powerhaus
14 Jul, 2014
Three time World Time trial Champion Tony Martin (OPQS) gave gave his 27 breakaway companions a lesson in solo riding today as he sped off the front of the days break with Alessandro De Marchi (Cannondale) on the descent of the days first climb the Col de la Schlucht, and then dropped his Italian companion on the big one of the day, the category 1 Markstein, with some 59 kilometres remaining.
From here it was poetry in motion as the German hunkered down in a big gear and turned it like a robot sometimes hitting 60kph on the flat roads.  With Astana riding as a unit behind in the peloton they were making no headway into the OPQS pro's lead and it was Martin all smiles at the finish in Mulhouse who took his first Tour de France road race stage win.  Martin who carries the nickname the "PanzerWagen" in the Belgian team has one more date set for the podium planned coming in the third week in the Tours 54km time trial.
