Double Olympic medallist Sam Bewley will become the latest New Zealand cyclist to compete in a Grand Tour event.
Bewley has today been named in the Orica GreenEDGE team for the Vuelta a Espana (Tour of Spain) to begin in a week.
The Rotorua rider joined GreenEDGE fulltime after winning his second Olympic medal in the team pursuit at the London Olympics, with his 2013 season disrupted with a broken collarbone.
He came off a mid-summer break with a strong performance at Tour of Utah where he supported Michael Matthews to two wins and had some of the best climbing legs of his career.
“Sam is a very important element in our team time trial squad for the World Championships,” said Sport Director Neil Stephens. “At this stage, we plan to race Sam for the first two weeks where he will do some essential support work for the team. We hope the racing gives him that final edge for the TTT in mid-September.”
