It’s a rare occasion when Mark Cavendish has to concede that he got beaten by a faster man but that is just what the Manx Missile had to do when asked to comment about his loss to German Marcel Kittel soon after the Tour de France stage finish into Tours today.
"I was just beaten today, yeah, that was it," Cavendish said. "We gave everything we could. The team did everything really perfect. We talked about the last stage but I think they were just spot on today. It was a duel between my team and Argos, but, yeah eventually he was just faster than me, simple as. You can sit and analyse it but if someone's just simply faster, there's nothing you can do."
Unfortunately for Kittels compatriot Andre Greipel the giant German was taken out in a mass pile up along with his key lead-out man Kiwi Greg Henderson, the duo were looking well organised being lead by their well drilled Lotto-Belisol team coming into the final kilometre when they were involved in the crash.
