Have Your Say!
9 Feb, 2013

A survey is your chance to have a say on the future sporting facilities in the Auckland region.

There is wide acceptance within the sports sector of the increasing importance for a more strategic and planned approach to the provision of facilities. This has been acknowledged at a national level with Sport New Zealand (formerly SPARC) investing in a number of national facilities strategies.

The development of these plans coupled with the formation of the Auckland Council has provided the impetus to collaboratively develop city wide plans to give direction for future investment in sport infrastructure within Auckland. This will ensure that investment is in-line with priorities, as identified in the facility plan and will ensure that ad-hoc development is avoided.

The Bike Facilities Plan is one of eight key facilities plans that Auckland Council has committed to prepare. The other seven are golf, bowls, rugby, rugby league, indoor court sports, aquatics and tennis. The Bike Facilities Plan differs to these in that it will cover four disciplines; road, track, mountain biking and BMX riding.

BikeNZ is proud to be a key partner in this project and is working alongside Auckland Council, representatives from each of the cycling codes, the Regional Sports Trust Alliance and Auckland Transport to guide the project in the identification of:

- current participation within the four sports

- current facilities and how these could be improved to meet the needs of users

- opportunities for major events for road cycling, track, bmx and mountain biking.

- future demand for facilities

- forecasts for participation

- planned facilities and a gap analysis to show what facilities are required

- the investment requried to i) maintain existing facilities ii) re-develop existing facilities and iii) develop new facilities.

- best practice recommendations for the operation and management of facilities

- priorities for investment in facilities for the four sports.

As the appointed project consultants Visitor Solutions have released a survey aiming to capture input to the project from the wider community. The aim of this survey is to identify facility issues, challenges and opportunities that riders in the community currently face when accessing cycling facilities in the region.

Your views are very important to the project, please complete the survey as fully as possible by 22nd February. If you have any questions please contact richard@visitorsolutions.net
