Vino Steals the Show in London
29 Jul, 2012

Alexandre Vinokourov has made a career out of it and last night’s Olympic gold medal performance from the Kazakh was no doubt his best.  Known affectionally as Vine the stocky Eastern European has been a performer at the highest level for over a decade and stole the show from the pre race favourites but spring boarding to the race breakaway during the stamina sapping 248km road race.  With the peloton controlled by team GB and the breakaway slowly reducing in its advantage thanks to the work of Wiggo and co Vino saw the opportunity to launch and breathe new life into the escapees.  Coming into the closing stages on to the run back into Mall and team GB blown to pieces after an incredible day's work Vino had whipped the remnants of the break into a focussed effort and were holding steady at 1 minute.  With only three medals up for grabs knew the tactical battle of who would chase if he were to attack, and that he did with Colombian Rigoberto Uran.  Uran was no match for the powerfully built Vinokourov who can now close the book on his glittering yet controversial cycling career.
