Voeckler Takes Amazing Victory
19 Jul, 2012

The hero of France Thomas Voeckler made his Tour de France Doubly good today with a classic victory on stage 16 as the Tour entered the Pyrenees.  Voeckler who was part of an escape group that was almost a third of the remaining peloton was out on an all day raiding mission to take over the lead in the King of the Mountains competition.  The Europcar professional after taking the top spoils on the days major climbs ripped the jersey of the leader of the past week Fredrik Kessiakoff (Astana) and now has a four point lead going into the final day in the mountains tomorrow.

Vincenzo Nibali third overall lived up to his predictions that he would attack repeatedly on the day’s final climb.  The Italian with the help of team mate Ivan Basso reduced the peloton to a select group of favourites with the notable exception of last year’s winner Cadel Evans.  The Australian who was reportedly ill coming into the stage faces a near impossible chance of making the final podium in Paris.

No change to the top three overall in this year’s event as they all finished together after cresting the top of the day’s final climb clear of the peloton and descended into Luchon.
