Pierre Rolland lived up to his team managers expectations when he touted the Frenchman as the man to watch out for on stage 11 of the Tour de France. Rolland who was part of a solid breakaway group for the majority of the stage slowly but surely rode all of his companions off his wheel to finish alone at the summit of the La Toussuire 55 seconds clear of the biggest names in this year’s Tour.
What made the victory even sweeter for Rolland was that he made it three road stage victories in a row for his nation and two in a row for his Europcar team backing up Thomas Voecklers win yesterday.
In the fight for the podium Vincenzo Nibali lit it up on the way to the final summit of the day repeatedly putting the SKY team into chase mode until there were two of them left with even more anxious moments to come for Wiggin's when team mate Froome let fly with the attack of the day but shot the yellow jersey off the back of the group. Such is the form of Froome at the moment he can be considered a real contender for the overall title should Wiggin's have the dreaded "bad day" in the Pyrenees to come.
