Pure Black Clean Sweep Chin Picnic Podium
2 Jul, 2012

Canada Day has turned black for Canadian cyclists with PureBlack Racing taking a clean sweep of the podium with first, second and third at the CHIN Picnic Criterium in Toronto.

James “Jimmy” Williamson, Roman van Uden and Taylor Gunman rode a powerful race to win the annual criterium which is a highlight of the Canada Day celebrations.

“It was pretty hard being out in the front the whole time but it was really cool,” said Williamson.  “The course was really fun as we raced around a park in downtown Toronto.  But I don’t think the Canadians are too happy about the results.”

Williamson and van Uden spent the 40 laps (around 60km) up the front after making a breakaway after the first sprint and holding off the peloton for the remaining 39 laps.

Gunman managed to better the rest of the field in the points race to take third.

“We’re really pleased about the result especially considering the past couple of days the team has had after Michael Torckler’s accident on Saturday,” said Williamson. “We were all so shocked; it is hard to deal with news like that.  We’re just relieved that he’s recovering and doing a lot better.”

PureBlack Racing will head to Vancouver on Wednesday for BC Superweek which comprises several independent events in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia.
“We are really looking forward to next week, we have had a relaxing past couple of weeks training in some really nice weather and we are ready to get back into racing again,” said Williamson.

BC Superweek, 6 – 15 July, kicks off with the Tour de Delta on Thursday in Vancouver (Friday morning NZT).
