Fabulous Fabian Takes Liege Prologue
1 Jul, 2012

Swiss time trial powerhaus Fabian Cancellara has put his tough early season behind him by taking first blood at the Tour de France today.  Cancellara who crashed out early season set the fastest time on the Liege course by seven seconds putting overall favourite Bradley "Wiggo" Wiggins into second place on the 7.1km technical circuit.
Defending Tour Champion Cadel Evans signalled he too has arrived in Belgium with solid form placing 13th 17 seconds of the lead.  One rider who will be left wondering what might have been is Tony Martin, the German World Time trial Champion suffered a mechanical fault on board his slippery TT machine and was forced to make a bike change mid course losing at least 20 seconds in the process.
Kiwi fans can take heart from the performance of their lone rider in the field with Greg Henderson putting in an astonishing ride in 23rd place just 20 seconds behind Cancellara showing he has lost very little of his speed from his track racing days.  Henderson who comes to le tour for the first time will be riding in the services of Andre Greipel, the giant German sprinter handpicked Henderson as the final rider in his lead-out train.  Hendy no doubt will be ready to take advantage of any opportunities that may come his way should Greipel be unable to execute.
