Valverde Takes Willunga Hill
21 Jan, 2012

Spaniard Alejandro Valverde signalled his return to World Tour cycling in the Santos Tour Down Under taking the Queen of stages up Old Willunga Hill.  In a two up battle to the finish line the Movistar rider edged slightly ahead of Australian Champion Simon Gerrans to take his first victory since serving his suspension in the Operation Puerto blood doping investigation.
Gerrans however did not leave the stage empty handed as the GreenEdge rider pulled on the leaders Ochre jersey with just one stage remaining.  Tomorrow will be no promenade for Gerrans and his GreenEdge team as he sits equal on time with Valverde making tomorrow a do or die stage.

Kiwi Jack Bauer rode an impressive stage to finish 9th up Old Willunga hill, the Garmin - Barracuda professional was just 26 seconds off the pace giving the Nelson rider a lot of confidence as he heads into his biggest season to date.
