The Santos Tour Down Under is almost here – with construction starting today on an
expanded Adelaide City Council Tour Village for 2012.
Acting Premier John Rau today announced that due to increasing demand the Adelaide City
Council Tour Village will be expanded from the southern side of Victoria Square to the
northern side, which will include an interactive bike expo.
Mr Rau said the village, which will open to the public on Sunday, 15 January, would be
bigger than ever, with 45 exhibitors compared with 25 in 2011.
“A highlight of the village this year will be the Adelaide City Council Bike Expo,” Mr Rau said.
“The expo will be an interactive and engaging exhibition where cycling fans will have the
chance to road test the latest bikes, ride a virtual stage of the Tour de France and equip
themselves with the latest cycling accessories like the pros.”
The southern side of the Adelaide City Council Tour Village will again be a meeting place for
cycling fans to grab a bite to eat and drink, catch up on the day's racing on the big screen,
check out the range of sponsor displays and see their cycling heroes up close.
The public will have the chance to see the team mechanics working on the bikes in the
afternoon in preparation for the next day’s racing.
The Adelaide City Council Tour Village will also feature exhibits from event sponsors
including Santos, ŠKODA, The Advertiser, Bupa, Hilton Adelaide, Malaysia Airlines, Adelaide
City Council, Jayco, University of South Australia and many more.
A daily entertainment program will showcase cycling to the fans, with prizes, competitions
and challenges. A party featuring a live band will follow the Bupa Stage 4 on Friday, January
Cycling enthusiasts will also be able to purchase all of the official Santos Tour Down Under
merchandise from the Adelaide City Council Tour Village.
“Entry to the Adelaide City Council Tour Village is free and offers a great chance for the
public to get up close and personal with the superstars of cycling,” Mr Rau said.
