Dan Barry has won Taranakiís Round the Mountain race in its centennial year. The win at the cycling classic is a continuation of the strong form PureBlack Racing demonstrated in their debut season in the US this year. While the team returned seven weeks ago the race was only the second back on home soil for the team. Last week PureBlack Racing secured all the podium spots and six of the top ten places in the Taupo to Napier race.
ďItís always fantastic to win a classic race and to win it in its centennial year is even better. Itís a great honour to be part of that history,Ē said Carl Williams, Sports Director of PureBlack Racing.
The elite scratch riders started 20 minutes behind the nearest group and they caught all the other riders on what was a very windy course before New Plymouth. Dan Barry won in a sprint finish for the team setting a new course record of 3 hours 25 mins. His time beat the previous record by four minutes.
Over 100 riders including some of New Zealandís leading professionals competed in the race which was first run in 1911 and has run almost every year since.
PureBlack Racingís next race is the Jayco Herald Sun Tour a UCI 2HC race in Melbourne 12-16 October. For more information on the team and racing schedule see www.pureblackracing.com
