Evans and Contador Start Showdown Early
6 Jul, 2011

The spectators of the Tour de France in Brittany were treated to a special sight yesterday as two of the biggest names in the Tour battled it out for line honors up the Mur de Bretagne, with the Tour still some days away from the Spaniards beloved mountain terrain he saw this as no obstacle as he attempted to rip the field apart mid way up the 10 percent gradient.  His acceleration was enough to form a select group off the front of the splintered peloton, notably absent was Luxembourger Andy Schleck who was unable to go with the acceleration and lost eight seconds of his advantage.

The day belonged to Evans though who narrowly edged out Contador by the width of a wheel and in doing so took his first Tour road stage of his career.  The Australians team had faith in their leader and forced the pace at the onset of the climb to the finish with Tour veteran George Hincapie putting himself to the sword and putting the entire peloton into the red zone.

Yellow Jersey Thor Hushovd turned in one of his most impressive performances ever to retain his lead in the overall standings.  The incredible Norwegian finished sixth and in the same time as Evans and deprive the Australian of the one second he was searching for to take the Yellow jersey.
